Concord Cranes Western Cape achieves 100% safety audit for De Beer Group project during Covid-19
De Beers Group and Concord Cranes Western Cape have commenced on the refurbishment project of an offshore, deepwater drilling vessel. We feel privileged be working alongside the highly respected De Beers Group. This opportunity gives our company the opportunity to further showcase our capabilities in the Western Cape region.
The Project Requirement
The refurbishment and maintenance of the vessel can take between 90 and 120 days. Concord Cranes has established an on-site office at the Sturrock Dry Dock in Cape Town’s port. There is both a day and a night shift team. Approximately 10 full-time Concord team members which include safety officers and crane operators are stationed on site for the project duration.
Our cranes will be responsible for removing parts and then replacing new parts and spares into position.
The Project
The vessel has arrived – namely ‘The Gariep’ and the project commenced in August 2020. The Gariep vessel is capable of exploring and retrieving diamond-bearing materials from the seabed to be later processed to a diamond-rich concentrate. “We have five cranes on the project, stationed at the port full-time and they range from 80T – 275T. Our 440T crane will also be pivotal for the heavier lift jobs,” says Brent Viljoen, Concord Cranes: Regional Manager. As it stands, the project is running seamlessly, with both the De Beers Group and Concord Cranes teams working closely together each day.
This project is not just ‘super supply’ but a very personal and meaningful project for the Concord Cape Town team. Site supervisor, Francious Schoonraad says, ‘working on site with De Beers is like being at home with your family.’
Not only have the Concord team had to meticulously prepare to meet the requirements of De Beers, but also strictly adhere to Covid-19 restrictions and protocols. The Concord team created a robust Covid-19 compliance strategy for the duration of the project which met the compliance standards of both de Beers Group and Concord. “We are particularly proud of our safety officer and his team for executing these stringent protocols for such a large-scale project. They did a very accurate and professional job and we received a 100% safety audit on both our container safety and Covid-19 compliance protocols. This has been a first for us all and a crucial feather in our Concord cap,” says Viljoen.
